So far the most inspiring tiny houses I’ve seen are designed by a Jay Shafer, the original founder of the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company. He got started over 10 years ago back in Iowa but is now living in Sabastopol, California. His houses are well crafted and carefully designed miniature homes often no larger than 100 square feet. He builds them on trailers to avoid certain construction constraints, like local building codes, and to make them portable. They are not as portable as a manufactured travel trailer simply due to size, weight, and shape but they are reported to tow just find behind a big pickup.
The Tumbleweed Tiny House Company sells plans, books, and can even build you a turn-key home. The tiny books he sells are a quick fun read but they are very small, no surprise 🙂 You can also attend one of their workshops and get hands on design and construction experience. If you’d like to see Jay’s tiny home in person he schedules regular open houses. I live about two hours from Sebastopol and hope to visit soon. I’ll post photos and a full report when I do.
Jay is brilliant I just love the idea of saving the environment for the future generation
Since some years I’m travelling a lot while it’s winter in Europa to some nice warm countries like South-Afrika, Australia and now Uruguay. Since that time I always had the wish for a home and I have good hope that with tinyhousedesign I can make this dream come true. Thanks for opening the eyes of the people to show, that size matters.
This is the coolest thing I have ever seen!
