In a few weeks the Solar Decathlon will open at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This is a biennial competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy where universities design and construct their visions for the ultimate sustainable solar home. They are showcases for innovative high tech energy solutions. You can see a preview of all 20 finalists at Jetson Green.
Below is my favorite. It’s the Silo House, the entry from Cornell University. I like the design for a lot of reasons but the use of multiple round small structures makes me think shed cluster, and I’m particularly fond of this tiny house concept.
Me likes it too 🙂
Okay, I failed to convince my wife to move in a Tiny House, in the shed cluster, in the solar thermal dog trot house.
Maybe she’ll dig this one
Had a chance to see this entry at the New York State Fair. It is a really great concept and there are some very interesting concepts at work. One of my favorite ideas was that it be built out of old silos, the had ones manufactured for the competition. My sole concern is that there is NO storage space and very few windows in this home. Few windows for energy efficiency and no storage because it’s not necessarily meant to be lived in. I really liked the design and it would be interesting to see someone take the design a step further to make it a more realistic living environment.
With that flat solar panels this works best in equatorial areas.
The cluster idea is nice, but round makes for so much more work/custom fitting of everything (from windows to cabinets).
i really inspired with the floorplan. i have plan to make a tiny house in the country side of my city. thanks
I love this – the tanks are so Aussie Outback. Can just see it blending into the background. We are working toward a Tiny House – somewhere, sometime.
Where on earth could you purchase silos?
One more unit and a central private patio…
